On Monday, March 3, Dr. Darcy Scharff and Richard
Kurz hosted a Community Forum
which considered the report, "A Crisis of Care" and recommended
outcomes that should be accomplished based on it. The Forum was a considerable
success and received some important media attention. Dr. Kurz and Dr. Hugh
Stallworth, adjunct faculty member, were both seen in an interview by KMOV,
Channel 4 , that aired early Saturday morning. Dr. Kurz was also quoted in an
article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch called "Poor Struggle to Get Good
Health Care" that can be read at http://stltoday.com or
click here for a detailed PDF
document about the report.
Research is an integral part of the mission of
the School of Public Health. Faculty members and students are involved in
research projects covering a wide range of topics. The breadth of topical areas
for research done in the School is indicative of the multi-disciplinary nature
of its component programs: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental and
occupational health, behavioral science and health education, health
administration, and health services research. This multi-disciplinary base
enables researchers to learn from one another and facilitates the combination of
viewpoints from a number of theoretical and applied disciplines to form
innovative projects.
Resources for research include the university Computing
and Information Systems and the university libraries
(Pius XII Memorial Library, Omer Poos Law Library, the Medical Center Library,
the School of Social Service Library, and Parks College Library). There are
opportunities for collaborative projects with researchers from other units at
Saint Louis University such as the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, the
Center for Health Care Ethics, Center for Health Law Studies and the School of
Business and Administration. Research with investigators at other local
universities, with public health professionals in city, county and state health
departments and with clinicians and managers at HealthLine, an occupational
health provider to many St. Louis corporations, is encouraged.
The following pages briefly describe research
activities at the School of Public Health. These activities include ongoing
research projects as well as formal opportunities for sharing ideas among
members of the School community and with outside scholars.

.Mary Gumble Levy Visiting Scholar Lecture
Series
Since the early 1980’s, the School has invited
to campus noted national scholars to make presentations and provide workshops
for faculty and students. The untimely loss of an outstanding doctoral student
in 1997 was the occasion for establishing an endowment for a doctoral
scholarship and the renaming of the series as the Mary Gumble Levy Visiting
Scholar Lecture. Recent visiting scholars have included, Stanislav Kasl, PhD,
Professor of Epidemiology at Yale University; Shoshanna Sofaer, DrPH, Associate
Professor, Department of Health Care Sciences, George Washington University;
Colleen McHorney, PhD, Professor, Department of Preventive and Community
Medicine, University of Wisconsin; and John Feussner, MD, Chief of Research
Development at the Veteran’s Administration.
