Community Support a Factor in Childhood Obesity Prevention Cheryl Kelly, PhD, MPH, a graduate of the School of Public Health in 2003 and 2006, presented at a conference on childhood obesity at Missouri State University in Springfield, MO.  Learn more here.

Leslie Bertsch, MPH, MS, a 2008 graduate of the School of Public Health and a Registered Dietitian with the Nutrition Services program at the St. Louis Department of Health, was featured in a story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about nutrition classes available at the Health Department's new Health Institute.  The class — Shopping with a Registered Dietitian — isn't part of a costly personal trainer's regimen or exclusive workshop.  It's one of many free educational programs offered by area health departments to help people get fit.  The class took place in Health Department's North Grand offices. . . . more

Corinne Walentik, M.D., MPH, 1992 graduate of the Department of Community Health and a professor of pediatrics in the division of neonatal/perinatal medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and neonatalogist at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center and SSM St. Mary's Health Center, has been honored by the Nurses for Newborns Foundation with the organization's "Champion for Babies Award." . . . . more

Salvador Cruz-Flores, MD, MPH, professor of neurology at Saint Louis University and 2009 graduate of the School of Public Health, will be invested on Tuesday, Feb. 24, as the inaugural holder of the Sidney W. Souers Endowed Chair in Neurology.  Cruz specializes in treating stroke patients. He directs Saint Louis University's Souers Stroke Institute and Saint Louis University Hospital's MidAmerica Stroke Network , which extends acute stroke care to rural, community and critical access hospitals throughout Missouri and central and southern Illinois. . . . more

Two students from the School of Public Health , Patrick Ercole, MPH (Public Health Studies) and Kate Beatty (Community Health) were among the prize winners at the 15th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium held on Friday, April 17, 2009 at SLU's Busch Student Center . Every department within The Graduate School is encouraged to participate in this interdisciplinary forum. Judges are selected from SLU faculty to represent the variety of disciplines. Monetary awards are given to the first, second, and third place papers and posters in each category. Mr. Ercole was awarded first place and Ms. Beatty was awarded third place in the Social Sciences Category. See the list of all award winners here .

A team of three Saint Louis University students working on their Master of Health Administration (MHA) degrees took third place in a national competition that used a real world health care scenario to test the knowledge and skills of future professionals.   Jennifer Keskey, Steven Meyer and Noel Pugh were coached by Kathleen Gillespie, Ph.D., associate professor in the

department of health management and policy, and Jason Turner, Ph.D., assistant professor of health management and policy, for the Feb. 18-19 competition sponsored by the University of Alabama in Birmingham. SLU's team won $4,500, and competed against students from 24 other universities. . . . more
