Dr.
Kurz is Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Management and Policy.
He also served as Dean of the School of Public Health for eight years during
the 1990’s. His research interests are in access to and quality of care for
disadvantaged populations, especially children. His recent research has
focused on identifying and reducing factors that create barriers to care for
individuals who are poor and uninsured. Dr. Kurz’s commitment to impacting
these concerns extends beyond formal research to service in key community
organizations.
He is President of the Board of Health for the City of St. Louis,
past-chair of Vision for Children at Risk (the metropolitan-wide children’s
coalition in the St. Louis region), and a board member of the Maternal, Child
and Family Health Coalition for the region. Dr. Kurz has also been active
professionally in health services management. He served as Editor of the
Journal of Healthcare Management (the primary scholarly publication of the
American College of Healthcare Executives) for six year, as Chair of the Board
of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA),
and on the Executive Committee of the Association of Schools of Public Health
(ASPH). He is now engaged in advancing health services management through
improved accreditation of academic programs and agencies. In this regard, he
serves as a Commissioner for the Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare
Management Education (CAHME) and as Co-Chair of the Council on Accreditation
for local health departments in the state of Missouri.
