HCRL Photo Calendars: The Health Communication Research Laboratory and Director, Dr. Kreuter are featured in the the SLU Newslink for their work to increase the number of urban children that are being immunized. The HCRL has provided parents with a personalized immunization calendar, complete with a picture of their baby, to help them keep track of upcoming immunization dates and other pertinent public health information. Student Selected to Serve on Missouri Advisory Council: Chris Gorrell, a student in our new Health Policy concentration, was recently selected by Governor Bob Holden to serve on Missouri’s Advisory Council on the Accessibility and Affordability of Health Insurance Coverage. The Council will research the issue of health insurance coverage and the characteristics of the uninsured in Missouri. The goal is to identify methods for ensuring access to health insurance and quality health care by assisting the state in developing plans that will address key issues. The Council is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Faculty In The News: Larry Figgs quoted in the Post-Dispatch about research linking bird viruses with human cancer. Kimberly Hessler from the Obesity Prevention Center talked about childhood obesity on Larry Conners’ hour-long live call-in KMOX-AM 1120 radio program. She was on Friday, December 19, 2003. Susie Nanney was quoted in the Staten Island Advance about why parents should eat right so their children will too. Beth Baker was quoted in multiple editions of the Suburban Journals about a new produce market involving SLU’s school of public health and four local churches that encourages people to make healthier food choices.

Upcoming IRB Question & Answer: Mark your calendars—a Question and Answer session regarding the new exempt IRB forms and IRB updates will be held for the School of Public Health on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM Salus Center, Room - SC1501. Environmental Health Lab Recruits For Carpet & Allergen Study: Seeking 20 area residences for a Carpet & Dust Borne Allergen Study led by the Environmental Health Lab in the School of Public Health. Participants would collect carpet dust samples for microbe & allergen analyses. Participation will take less than an hour to complete. Each participant will be required to allow researchers to collect carpet dust samples from their residences by vacuuming and setting tape traps for 24 hours. Finally each participant will be asked to participate in a brief survey. The occupants of study homes will be informed of the dust analysis results so that they can take the necessary environmental control steps, if desired. Full confidentiality will be maintained. Julie Randall New Financial Coordinator:  Julie comes to from State Street Bank & Trust where she has been working as a Trust Administrator. Currently, she is a new financial coordinator who is housed under the School and also the University's Treasurer's Office so she splits her time between each area.   She is already familiar with the University since SLU has been a client at State Street Bank & Trust for the past ten years.   Welcome, Julie!

 

New Researcher Assists RUPRI Work:  We welcome Courtney Andrews, MPPA, a current PhD Candidate Political Science at UMSL who is now working for Dr. Timothy McBride as a Senior Research Assistant.  She will be designing, developing, and maintaining data systems for tracking and reporting results of data collected in the RUPRI Center for Rural Health Policy Analysis projects. Previous to her position here, she was a Research Specialist at the Public Policy Research Center (Community and Neighborhood Development Division) at the University of Missouri—St. Louis.

Recent News:

OSHA head John Henshaw visited the SPH:  The top official at the OSHA recently visited the School to discuss how to protect ambulance drivers and other emergency workers from new infectious diseases such as SARS.  Assistant Secretary of Labor John Henshaw was invited to the school by faculty from the school's division of Environmental and Occupational Health and the Center for the Study of Bioterrorism and Emerging Infections.  They discussed possible solutions such as using a special light to identify dangerous pathogens on ambulance surfaces, and implementing new sterilization techniques. http://www.slu.edu/readstory/newslink/3493

 

Dr. Tim McBride Reacts to Medicare Reform Bill:  Many media outlets consulted Dr. McBride’s expertise on the Senate’s passage of a Medicare reform bill.  He was interviewed by local media stations  – KMOV-TV, KTVI-TV, KPLR-TV, KMOX Radio, KTRS Radio, Missouri Net and Metro Networks News. In The News:  Beth Baker was quoted about an initiative that involves community churches in encouraging people to eat healthier in the Suburban Journals. Susie Nanney was quoted in Chicago Parent Newsmagazine about why it’s important for parents to set a good example to get their children to eat right. And Channel 5 ran a 10 p.m. cover story about St. Louis' fittest and fattest neighborhoods featuring Ph.D. candidate Christy Hoehner. It was repeated on the noon show and during the morning.

 

Rep. Johnson Awarded For Mental Health Work: The St. Louis Chapter of the National Association on Mental Illness (NAMI) recently awarded Alumna, Representative Connie L. Johnson, the Outstanding Legislator of the Year Award.  The award honored Representative Johnson for her outstanding leadership in preventing budget cuts to vital mental health services, as well as threats to put restrictions on Medicaid benefits for persons with severe mental illness.  The award was presented to Representative Johnson at the NAMI 25th Anniversary Gala, which was held on Sunday, November 23, 2003 at the Junior League of St. Louis. 

 

Dean Balas Writes Op-Ed on Patient Safety:  The Post-Dispatch ran an op-ed on patient safety/medical errors, written by Dr. Andrew Balas, who served on an Institute of Medicine panel that just released a report on this topic.  Dr. Balas emphasized that uniform standards for recording, accessing and exchanging electronic information in medicine would drastically reduce errors, a major public health challenge.  The article was published on November 24. 

MHA Program Completes Self-Study for Accreditation: The Department of Health Management and Policy has completed its Self-Study for accreditation review by the Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Services Administration (ACEHSA). Site visitors will be on campus November 5, 6, and 7, 2003, to complete the assessment process. A link is provided to Volume I of the Self-Study and the Department encourages everyone to review it.
