Bachelor of Science in Health Management (BSHM)

The Bachelor of Science in Health Management (BSHM) is offered through the Department of Health Management and Policy (HMP) in the School of Public Health (SPH). The degree is designed to meet the demand for people to take challenging positions in the health care industry. At 16 percent of the nation’s budget, the organization, financing and delivery of health care services demands critical review, change and innovation. It is center stage for federal, state, and local government, employers, unions, insurance companies, drug manufacturers, research, clinicians and patients and their families. Jobs in health management are expected to grow by as much as 35% by the year 2010 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition to these career opportunities, the BS in Health Management is excellent preparation for graduate training in health management, medicine or health law. For additional information about undergraduate programs in the field of health management see: www.AUPHA.org.

About the Department of Health Management and Policy:

• Awards a master of health administration (MHA) degree, ranked 12th among graduate programs in health administration by US News and World Report;

• Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the MHA program at SLU;

• Employs nationally and internationally known faculty who teach both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Curriculum

There are three tracks in the BSHM program. The General Track is intended for students with non-clinical training or backgrounds. This includes pre-health law students. The other two are intended for Clinical Scholars and pre-medical students. The latter two tracks are designed so the basic science classes necessary for medical school are taken as part of the Arts and Science requirements.

The overall goal of the program is to provide training to students interested in managing our health care resources to improve the population’s health.

The core curriculum consists of:

  • Health management course work in freshman and sophomore years.
  • 75 hours of liberal arts, business and other background courses.
  • 30 hours of health management, such as:
    • Contemporary challenges in health care
    • Management of health care organizations
    • Health care economics and policy
    • Health care marketing
    • Health care financial management
    • Strategic management in health care.

The pre-med and the med scholars tracks add science sequences expected for admission in to medical school.

Admission requirements are: a 2.5 GPA, three letters of recommendation and acceptable scores on the SAT or equivalent standardized tests.
