The Department of Community Health offers the Master of Public
Health (M.P.H.) professional degree with concentrations in
Behavioral Science and Health Education, Biosecurity and
Disaster Preparedness, Biostatistics, Environmental and
Occupational Health, and Epidemiology. The Professional
Option-Practice concentration is available for experienced
health professionals who wish to work in public health
practice. Joint concentrations are offered in
Biostatistics/Epidemiology, Environmental Health/Epidemiology,
and Behavioral Science/Epidemiology. The Department of Health
Management and Policy offers the Master of Public Health
(M.P.H.) with a concentration in Health Policy.
Dual-degree programs are available with the
School of Social Service (MPH/MSW), the School of Nursing
(MPH/Nurse Practitioner), the School of Law (MPH/JD), the
School of Medicine (MPH/MD), the Department of Nutrition and
Dietetics (MPH/MS), and the Department of Psychology. All MPH
degree programs require a practice experience.
The Master of Science (MS) degree in
Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness is offered in a distance
learning format.
The Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH)
degree with concentrations in Epidemiology and in Behavioral
Science is offered for researchers with terminal degrees
(including MD, DO, DC, DDS, DVM or PhD) who seek training in
population based research methods to support their clinical
research activities.
The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health
Policy is offered in the Department of Health Management and
Policy, preparing students for careers as health policy
analysts and advocates in both public and private sector
organizations.
The School of Public Health is accredited by
the Council on Education for Public Health.

Class Scheduling
There are a variety of scheduling formats described below
designed to meet the varying needs of full time and part-time
students, including working professionals. Full time (2 years)
and part time (3 or more years) curriculum plans are available
to meet the needs of the School’s diverse student body.

- Traditional semester or four-hour format:
daytime or evening weekly meetings for ten to fifteen weeks
in the fall, spring or summer semester
- Weekend Format: Four and a half daylong
meetings on Fridays, Saturdays and/or Sundays over eight to
ten weeks in the fall, spring and summer semesters;
sometimes includes evenings.
- Week Day Format: four and a half daylong
meetings, over eight to ten weeks in the fall, spring or
summer semester.
- Intensive Format: half or full-day
meetings over a period of one to ten weeks.
- Distance Education: Some courses are also
offered via internet connection or using CD-ROM technology.
Practice Experience
MPH students are required to complete the equivalent of 360
hours of applied public health experience, which may be done
in a full time, nine-week (40 hours per week) block or spread
over several months (up to one year). The internships occur in
a variety of public health and health services settings under
the guidance of a preceptor. Specific details of Practice
