The Biosecurity degree programs offered
through the School of Public Health are designed to provide
professional training and management preparation to meet the
needs of a wide variety of healthcare and security
professionals interested in this expanding field. Public
health professionals, physicians, nurses, emergency management
professionals, first responders, and corporate security
managers will be armed with the necessary tools to prepare for
and respond to natural and terrorist threats.
The field of biosecurity is a public health
specialty that is among the fastest growing within the
discipline. Due to its explosive growth since 2000, the
biosecurity workforce is largely untrained. The program
provides specific competency-based training in such areas as
terrorism response capabilities, fundamentals of infectious
diseases, emergency response planning and crisis
communication.
This program is a hybrid, with classes
provided both on campus and through distance technology. Two
semesters (15 credit hours) of residency for full-time
students are required, as well as a Practice Experience (which
is similar to an internship). The program is provided through
the School of Public Health at Saint Louis University, a fully
accredited school of public health. The degree can be
completed in two years if two courses are completed each
semester.
